ガイジンのお仕事

Colt: 君は日本にいて学ぶことが多いと思うんだけど、レスラーとしてはプエルトリコにいる時よりも大変だと思うんだ。何故なら、毎日毎日試合をしても、自分で研究をしないといけないから。誰も通訳はしてくれないし。かたや、プエルトリコでは英語が周りにある環境だから、フィードバックが早いと思うんだ。

(Colt: You're probably in Japan, learning a lot, but I'd imagine as a wrestler, it's harder. Because you may be working day in and day out, but you almost have to figure out by yourself. Because no one is going to translate it for you. Whereas, in Puerto Rico, there's lot of English going around where it can kind of be explained to you a little quickly.)

 

Bison: そのとおりだね。日本では誰も間違いを指摘してくれないからね。自分で学ぶしかないんだ。観客の反応をよく観察しないといけない。もしファンが自分のやっていることに反応をしてくれたら…

(Bison: Yeah, exactly. In Japan, they're not gonna tell you what you're doing wrong. You gotta learn on you own, you gotta listen to the people. If the fans in Japan like something that you're doing…)

 

Colt: 一つ聞きたいことがあるんだけど、多くの人が日本のプロレスファンは、あまり会場で声を上げないものだと思っているよね。

(Colt: There's something I want to ask you really quick. I think a lot of people think of Japanese wrestling fans, they are just being really quiet. )

 

Bison: そうだね。もし彼らから何かしらの反応を引き出すことが出来たなら、それを次からルーティンに組み込む必要があるんだ。一度感覚を覚えれば簡単だが、これはゆっくり学んでいくしかない。その点、ノアはゆっくりと学ぶ余裕を与えてくれる。彼らは一年に２，３回ツアーに参加させてくれるて、もし適応することが出来て、努力もしていれば、日本に招聘し続けてくれる。かたやプエルトリコでは、俺は巨体のヒールを演じていて、負け試合ばかりさせられていたんだ。それでルーク（IWAで外人選手の世話役をしていた元プロレスラー）に文句を言いに行ったんだ。彼曰く ”ヒールはベビーフェイスを立てるものなんだ。あとはブーツの裏に地元のレストランとかのスポンサーの名前を入れておけばいい。それがヒールの在り方なんだよ。それに、君はプエルトリコに来てるガイジンなんだから、プエルトリコの選手をよく見せなくちゃいけない。”

(Bison: Exactly. If you get them to react what you're doing, you keep that in your routine. It's kind of easy. You just learn slowly. And Pro-wrestling Noah allows you to learn slowly. They are going to bring you over for may be two three tours a year. And as long as you're progressing, and working hard, they are going to keep bringing you back. Puerto Rico… um you know I was the big bad heel, and I didn't understand why I was losing every night. And when I went to Luke, "What's going on?" He goes "Mate, Heels put the Babyfaces over and you should have Eat At Joe's on the bottom of your boots or some sort of sponsors on your bottom of boots because that's what heels do. And plus you're a foreigner coming to Puerto Rico, you are supposed to make Puerto Ricans look good." )

 

Colt:なるほど、今となっては君にとっても当たり前のことだよね。

(Colt: Right, you understand that now. )

 

Bison:もちろんだ。

(Bison: Of course.)

 

Colt:でも、君の場合は ”俺は5000人の観客の前で小橋と試合をしたんだ。俺はもっと勝ち試合を組まれてもいいはずだ。” という気持ちもあるわけで。

(Colt: But when you were at that point and case, "I just fucking wrestled Kobashi in front of 5000 people. I'm ready to fuck people up.")

 

Bison: そうだね。”俺はスターだ。もっとプッシュしてくれよ。”という気持ちもあった。でも、何年かして学んだのは…俺がプエルトリコや日本に招聘されているのは、彼ら自国の選手をよく見せるためなんだ。それが俺の仕事なんだ。今ではそれを受け入れている。

(Bison: "Yeah, I'm the man. Push me to the moon" but, what I've learned over the years… is…. I'm brought over to Puerto Rico and Japan to make the local talent look good. That's my job. And I accept that. )

 

Colt: 完全に受け入れているの？例えば… ”もう俺は何年もノアに参戦していて、プエルトリコにも何年も住んでいて、もうガイジンという感じでもなくなった。ホームのレスラーと同じ扱いを受けるべきだ。” という気持ちは湧かない？

(Colt: Do you accept that? I mean… when does the point where it's fucking… "Hey, I've been coming to fucking Pro-wrestling Noah… or I've been living in Puerto Rico… like I'm not a foreigner any more. I'm one of you guys. Let's make this happen.)

 

Bison: たしかに、選手とフロントは俺の家族みたいなものだと思っているよ。彼らには歓迎されていると感じるし、彼らとは兄弟みたいなものだと思っている。でも、彼らをよく見せるという役割を受け入れているという事実に変わりはないんだ。彼らの国なんだからね。俺はいつだって ”余所者” なんだ。もう一度言うけど、ノアは俺にとって家族みたいなものだ。それでも自分の役割は受け入れている。俺は自分のことを”栄光あるジョバー”だと思っている。俺がデカくて強いガイジンだというストーリーを立ててもらって、肝心の試合を迎える時は、チャンピオンをよく見せる試合をするんだ。それが俺の仕事なんだよ。

(Bison: Yeah. I believe that the wrestler and the office are my family. You know, I feel welcome… I feel like a brother to these guys. But… I accept my role as making those guys look good. This is their country. And I'm always going to be a visitor. Again, I still feel like a family to Pro-wrestling Noah, but I accept my role. You know, I call myself a "glorified jobber". "Build me up build me up" and then when that match comes, I make the champion look good. That's my job.)

 

The Tragedy

Colt: そうか…君はタッグ王者にはなったことがあるよね？

(Colt: Ah… you were the Tag Champ right?)

 

Bison: そうだね。せめてもの評価という感じで獲らせてもらったことがあるよ。齋藤彰俊とGHCタッグ王者になったことがある。最長防衛記録を樹立したよ。キース・ウォーカーとは３ヶ月間ベルトを巻いていた。

(Bison: Yeah, they threw me a bone. I was GHC Tag Team Champion with Akitoshi Saito. We're the longest reigning champion in the Noah's history. And then I was a champion with Keith Walker which lasted about three months. )

 

Colt: それで、君のタッグ王者時代に… これは、もし話したくなければいいんだけど… 君は三沢の最後の相手だったんだよね？

(Colt: And while you were champion with… and I don't know if you want to talk about this at all… but I think it's crazy… Uh, you were in match with Misawa, right?)

 

Bison: そうだね。

(Bison: Yeah.)

 

 

Colt: それで、その試合で三沢が亡くなったわけなんだけど…この話はして大丈夫？

(Colt: So Misawa passes away… Is this okay to talk about?)

 

Bison: ああ、構わないよ。

(Bison: Yeah, go for it.)

 

Colt: 以前にWWEでレフリーをしているジム・コルデラスをゲストに招いたことがあって。彼はオーエン・ハートが亡くなった時の試合を裁いていたんだ。それで三沢の話もしたいと思っていて…

(Colt: I mean I just… I had Jimmy Korderas on who is a WWE refree, he was in the ring when Owen Hart passed away. And Misawa…)

 

Bison: 実はこのことについてはずっと話したいと思っていたんだ。たしか、あれは2009年6月13日の試合だった。会場は広島で。潮崎豪と三沢光晴がちょうどグローバルタッグリーグを制した後だった。俺達の間で雌雄を決するという試合だったんだ。試合の日は熱帯夜だった。三沢は、理由は分からないんだが、一週間ほどあまりよく眠れないでいたんだ。気分も良くなかったみたいで。その時はあんな事件が起こるなんて微塵も思っていなかった。今更言っても仕方ないことだけど、彼は明らかに消耗していたし、リングに上がるべきじゃなかった。でも、三沢はファンのためには1000％を尽くすタイプの男だったんだよ。

(Bison: This is something that I've always wanted to talk about. Um… let me think… June 13th 2009… it might be the 14th but I think it's the 13th. Anyways it was at Hiroshima. Go Shiozaki and Mitsuharu Misawa had just won the Global Tag League. And it was time to give go the rub. Um, so… that night in Hiroshima, it was a hot night… Uh, Misawa, for some reason, that whole week, he hadn't been sleeping well. He hadn't felt well. But you didn't know that it was going down at the time. But hindsight is 20/20, you look at it now, and it's like… yeah, the guy was exhausted, he shouldn't have been out there doing… But Misawa was the type of guy that… you know, he's gonna give the fans a 1000%.)

 

 

Colt: プロレスラーは皆そうだよ。ツアー中で風邪を引いても、耐えながら試合をするんだ。

(Colt: And we're all like that. Tours, we get sick. We just bite through it.)

 

Bison: それが俺たちプロレスラーの性分なんだ。それで…三沢は試合序盤での俺と斎藤によるツープラトン攻撃で怪我を負ったんだと思う。あの試合がTVで放映されることは無いだろうけど、映像を見れば、合体攻撃で怪我を負っているのが分かるよ。彼はその直後にリングアウトして、５分間は横になっていたからね。俺は異変を感じて彼のことを気に掛けていたんだ。最初は脳震盪か何かのアクシデントだと思っていた。とにかく、彼は起き上がってコーナーに立つことも出来なかった。その後、彼がタッチをしてリングに入ってきて、少し絡んだ。彼はその時点では動けていたんだ。それで、俺が彼を捕らえて、斎藤が入ってきて、バックドロップをした。それで、彼が脳震盪を起こしたと思ったんだ。だから俺は ”試合を止めろ！何かおかしいぞ！” と叫んだんだ。それでレフリーが試合を止めた。その後も俺はリングの上で客にアピールを続けていたんだ。誰かがリング上で怪我をしても、キャラクターは崩しちゃいけないからね。結局、試合も打ち合わせ通りに進まなくなって。明らかに何かがおかしいことは分かったんだが… 三沢はタフな選手なんだよ。彼はずっと怪我と闘いながらプロレスを続けてきた。だから、今回もただの脳震盪だと思った。でも彼の顔を見てみたら真っ青だったんだ。そして彼の心血管、つまり肺か心臓に何か問題があると確信したんだ。俺はそれまで、どれだけ深刻な状況か理解していなかったんだ。脳底か頭蓋底が折れてしまったわけだから、すぐに四肢が麻痺して自発呼吸が出来なくなってしまった。そして、残念なことに亡くなってしまった。会社にとっても大打撃だったし、俺達のモラルも揺さぶられたよ。それでも、前に進み続けないといけなかったんだ。あの興行のあとに三つも興行があって、次の日にはバスに乗って福岡に向かっていたよ。

(Bison: Yeah, we go. Um… and so, I think Misawa got hurt earlier in the match on a double team move that Saito and I did to him. I don't think the match will ever be aired on TV, but if it ever is, you'll see the double team move and I think that's where he got hurt. Because he rolled out to the floor, and lied there for literally 5 minutes. And I kept checking on him because I knew something was wrong. I thought he had just got a concussion and those accidents happen. Anyways, Misawa can't work his way up to the corner. He got tagged in, he came in, he and I did some stuff. He was okay. And then I stopped him, Saito came in, did some stuff. And gave him a routine belly to back suplex. And um… I thought that he had a concussion. So I was yelling "Stop the match! Stop the match! There's something wrong." And the referee stopped it. And um… so, I was pacing in the ring. Anytime someone gets hurt, you know you're thinking about that guy, but again, you gotta stay in character. And um… the match didn't turn out the way that it was supposed to turn out. So, something's really wrong, but Misawa was so tough. He worked hurt his whole career. And I thought it was just a concussion. And I looked him in the face. His face was blue. I definitely knew something was wrong with his cardiovascular, his lungs and heart. I didn't know how dire the situation was. It was really dire he had snapped his neck up at the base of his brain or the base of the skull. Automatically, he was a quadriplegic and he couldn't breath on his own. And unfortunately passed away. It was huge blow to our company. Huge blow to our moral. But you know… we kept marching forward. We had three shows after that show. We got on the bus next day and went on to Fukuoka and wrestled.)

 

Colt: そういった死に立ち会ったことはそれまでにもあったの？

(Colt: Have you ever been around death to that extent?)

 

Bison:ああ。ビクター”ザ・ボディガード”は2004年にプエルトリコの興行中に亡くなってる。俺の目の前で心臓発作を起こしたんだが、あそこまで凄惨な現場には立ち会ったことがなかったよ。

(Bison: Yeah, um… Victor "The Bodyguard" died in 2004 in a show of Puerto Rico. He had heart attack right in front of me, which was the ugliest thing I've ever seen.)

 

Colt: それじゃあ、もう本当に…

(Colt: So, you saw him like physically…)

 

Bison: ああ、自分の心臓を押さえて、陸に打ち上げられた魚みたいに口をパクパクしていたよ。彼の口が… 息をしようとしているのに、それも叶わず、そのまま倒れて、酷い心臓発作で亡くなってしまった。あとは、APWで練習生が死んだことがあった。

(Bison: Yeah, he was clutching his chest and he looked like fish out of water, like trying to catch his breath. His mouth was trying to… he's trying to breath and he couldn't and he just fell over and passed away at a massive heart attack. Had a kid at APW die.)

 

Colt: そうだったね。グレート・カリの事件だっけ？

(Colt: That's right. With the Kali? No?)

 

Bison: ああ、カリが相手にパワーボムをして、相手が脳出血を起こしてリングで亡くなった。

(Bison: Yeah, Kali gave him the power bomb and kid had a brain hemorrhage and died in the ring.)

 

Colt: なんというか…君はデカくてタフな野郎だよね。でも、リングを下りれば普通の人間なわけだ。こういった体験に苦しめられることはないの？

(Colt: I mean… you're a big tough dude. Like, we're all humans at the end of the day. And does this fuck with you?)

 

Bison: 人生において誰にも等しく保障されているのが ”いつか人は死ぬ”ことだということに気づき始めたんだ。

(Bison: Um… I'm starting to learn that the one guarantee in life is that "We're gonna die.")

 

Colt: それは間違いないね。

(Colt: For sure.)

 

Bison:もう自分の中ではそれを受け入れてしまっているんだ。人は死ぬんだよ。交通事故に遭ったら、人は死ぬ。俺達がリング上で行なっていることは車の衝突事故に近いこともあるんだ。死に至るような大きなバンプ（受け身）を取って生きてる奴もいる。その一方で、三沢のように小さいバンプを取って死ぬこともあるんだ。

(Bison: And it's almost like I've accepted it. You know, people die. People get in car wrecks, they die. What we do in the wrestling ring is pretty close to car wreck sometimes. There's a lot of guys that have taken some big bumps that I thought, should have died but didn't. And when I see guys that have taken minuscule bumps like Misawa and die.)

 

Colt: ついさっき、ジャック・エバンスが金網の上から飛び降りた話をしてたんだ。

(Colt: We were just talking about that Jack Evans thing off the cage.)

 

Bison: ああ、ジャック・エバンスは6mの金網の上から飛び降りたのに、ピンピンしてる。

(Bison: Yeah, Jack Evans falling off 20 foot cage and the kid is fine.)

 

Colt: そうだね。あと…三沢はその…これは言い方がおかしいかも知れないけど…君は日本に来て１０年経つわけなんだけど、他と比べてどんな選手だったのかな？

(Colt: Right. Ah… Was Misawa someone that let you like… that's a horrible thing to say… Like there's a lot of guys I guess since you've been over here for almost 10 years.)

 

Bison: 三沢は静かだけど凄みがあるタイプだったよ。とても近寄り難くて。彼は毎日タバコを二箱吸っていたから、あの喫煙者特有のくぐもった笑い方をしていた。俺はそれを聞くのが好きだったよ。静かで凄みがあるけど、団体の選手を愛していて、プロレスを愛していて、そしてノアという団体を愛していたよ。ただ、それを口に出さないだけでね。
